How does it handle normal PDFs versus scanned ones?

Automatically. For each page we first pull the PDF’s real, embedded text with the PDF engine — that’s instant and exact. If a page has little or no text (a scan or an image), we fall back to OCR: the page is rendered and read with text recognition. So a normal text PDF is extracted in a moment and never downloads the OCR engine at all, while scanned pages are still handled.

Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser, on your device — your PDF is never uploaded. The only network request is a one-time download of the OCR engine and language data (only if a scanned page is found), which is then cached. Your document itself always stays local.

Why did extracting text from my scan take a while?

Scanned pages are images, so each one has to be recognised with OCR, which runs on your device and is slower than reading embedded text. The first scanned page also downloads the OCR engine once. A live progress bar shows the page it’s working on, and text-based PDFs skip all of this.

How accurate is the OCR on scanned pages?

For pages that already contain real text, extraction is exact. For scanned or image pages we use OCR, which is most accurate on clear, straight, printed scans. Skewed or low-resolution scans, faint print and handwriting are much harder, so check those pages — and because the result is fully editable, you can fix anything that came through wrong.

Can I choose the language for scanned pages?

Yes. Pick the language before you upload — it’s used whenever a page needs OCR. Choosing the language that matches the document gives noticeably better results. It’s ignored for pages that already have embedded text.
